Why Great Posture at Work Will Make You Happy

A Common Problem

Let’s face it. It just happens. High are the chances you’re doing it right now in fact! Slumped over or slouching at your computer desk. It happens to us all for sure, but did you know that slipping into that slouch effects more than just your physical body? Similar to how our body language affects people’s perceptions of us; our posture can alternately effect how we feel about ourselves and how others see us. Let’s take a look at how good posture can make you happy:
 

Effects on Your Physical Body

First, let’s look at the obvious. Bad posture will have adverse effects on your body. The most common complaints from office workers would be: the lower back at 63%, shoulders at 38%, neck at 53%, and wrist pains at 33%. As you can see by the numbers, the people surveyed reported multiple pain points. That’s because your body is connected! Nothing functions independent of each other, so if your back is hurting and strained, you can be sure that it will be pulling or straining another part of your body. Pain can often show up in unusual places, and even in different places than the injury or stress.
 

Effects on Your Emotions

Being in pain is...well, a pain. Especially if you are dealing with chronic pain. It can wear you down to just surviving your days and pulling off the bare minimum. That doesn’t allow for much creativity or health, to say the least. Good posture at your office desk can be a huge contributor to a positive emotional state. There are many interesting studies that point to how our body language and postures are linked to how we feel about ourselves and how we react to certain situations. That means that you can have a positive impact on how you feel by choosing to work on good posture at your desk and throughout the day.


How to Get Good Posture in the Office

Here we go! So for sitting at a desk, try alternating your office chair’s backrest between a 90 degree position and 100 to 135 degree position. The real key here is to keep moving. Yes, you may have to stay at your workstation, but try alternating your seat back’s position every 20 minutes. Make certain that your chair is high enough to allow for proper use of your keyboard, as much wrist and arm pain can be avoided this way.

Again, try alternating the height of your chair to allow your arms and legs to sit at different angles, minimizing the time spent in a single position. Keep in mind that the proper beginning position for height is with your feet flat on the floor. If you can’t sit at your desk comfortably in this position, consider buying a desk or office chair that will make it possible. As for your mouse, keyboard and monitor; make sure they sit directly in front of you. The monitor, in particular, should be arms length away and up off your desk so that you can view it without looking down. Make use of a wrist rest when you’re not typing, as well as an office chair with armrests. Again, alternate these positions!
