The Important of Exercising in the Office

The Important of Exercising in the Office

Over the past few years, there have been multiple studies done that demonstrate the dangers of sitting at a desk all day, every day.  These studies have found an elevated rate of cardiovascular disease, obesity, type 2 diabetes and high blood pressure.  Unfortunately, adults sit an average of 10 – 12 hours per day, mostly while at the office working.  It may seem impossible to exercise while simultaneously working.  However, it can be done and incorporating some stretching and short exercises at work into your day can have tremendous benefits for your help.

Why Stretch?

Stretching throughout the day is an easy way to help loosen up the muscles in your body, preventing those aches and pains that are often accompanied by long periods of time sitting.  Some of the most effective stretches that can be done while at your desk include:

  • Neck stretching – Tilt your head back, stretching your chin up to the ceiling.  Lift your chin as high as possible, hold a few seconds then release.  Repeat as desired.
  • Hand stretching – Interlock your fingers, flip your arms and stretch them out directly in front of you, hold a few seconds then release.  Repeat with other arms and do something as desired.

Working on your posture in the office is another great way to strengthen your body without leaving your chair.  Sit up straight, tighten your core and arch your shoulders back.  Hold for up to five seconds, then release.  Repeat.

The Benefits of Exercising Regularly

Between work and home commitments, it is no surprise that many adults find it hard to squeeze in a trip to the gym.  Doing short workouts throughout the day can provide many of the same benefits that a longer, dedicated gym workouts can.  Whether you do 3, 10-minute workouts or one 30-minute session, it all adds up to the same amount of time.  Here are some simple ideas and tips for exercises at work:

  • Switch your chair for an exercise ball to work your core.
  • Walk to your coworker’s desk instead of emailing or calling.
  • Stand up at your desk and jog in place for one minute.
  • Opt for taking the stairs instead of the elevator.
  • Take a 30-minute walk on your lunch break.
  • Park a few blocks away from the office or at the back of the parking lot.
