The Importance of Having a Safe Warehouse

December 10, 2018
The Importance of Having a Safe Warehouse

Working in a warehouse can be extremely hard and tiresome on its own, let alone the health and safety hazards that are present almost anywhere. No matter how careful you are, working in a warehouse will expose you to different kinds of dangerous situations. Although you can’t avoid them entirely, here are our top 5 tips on how to reduce the risk of getting injured at work to a minimum.

Ensure Safety Equipment is Present At All Times

Although it comes as a given that helmets and safety glasses are a must for most warehouse workers, there are still cases where the lack of them failed to prevent fatal accidents. That’s why you need to make sure that, when required, employees must have proper eyewear and hard hats. Make sure your employees are aware that even if it seems redundant in 99% of the cases, that 1% can bring terrifying consequences. Using proper warehouse safety equipment may be, but it definitely pays off in the long run.

Provide Optimal Working Conditions

When you make sure that the employees did their part, make sure you do yours. Maximize your warehouse safety by storing away all dangerous equipment and clearly label it. Also, if some walkways are potential threats to your employees, make sure you mark them with proper safety signs like the ones you can find at Crites & Riddell. Notify employees of dangerous surroundings and start preventing injuries today.

Keep the Warehouse Floor Clean

As much as this advice seems basic, it still needs to be said. All warehouse (and office) floors must be cleared and the workers should wear anti-slip shoes. This is a mission that all employees need to achieve and security checks like this one need to be carried out on a regular basis. Make sure you organize regular cleanups, not just to dry off the floor, but also to get rid of stray cords, boxes, and of course hazardous items. Regular checkups don’t take too much time, but they could mean a lot for the safety of all employees.

Protect Your Back

Although back injuries often happen in warehouses, they can occur in offices as well. Poor posture will put undue strain on the spine. However, more common injuries come from lifting heavy loads and the infamous twisting, pushing, and pulling motions. All this can be avoided with proper management of heavy loads, good posture retainment and using the appropriate warehouse equipment.

Take All Necessary Safety Precautions

Last but not least, you’ll need to ensure that all staff is up to date with the latest safety precautions and safe practices inside the workplace. You can even hold a seminar once or twice a year to make sure all workers know how to avoid accidents. Most of the accidents occur when employees are trying to save time by cutting corners. If you make sure that your employees are well-aware of the repercussions, the risk of accidents happening will be drawn to a minimum.
