Five Ways to Beat the Winter Workplace Blues

The winter months are often bleak and cold, having an impact on our mood and productivity in the workplace. Although the lack of sunshine may be the leading factor, there are several steps you can take to beat the winter blues while at your place of employment. Show winter who’s boss by putting into play these next five tips:

1. Take your break outside

While it might be cold throughout the winter months, getting some fresh air is definitely a must. Even if the sunlight may not be very apparent, taking a few minutes to breathe the fresh air and getting your blood circulating can do a lot for the morale. Have a quick lunch and spend the last 15 minutes of your break taking a stroll around the block. Better yet, do it with a friend!

2. Exercise when possible

Taking time to squeeze in a 30 minute workout at least twice or three times a week is a great way to beat the winter blues. Exercising helps to boost serotonin levels, keeping you feeling and looking great. Especially if you work at a desk all day, try to buy out the time to get moving.

3. Get social

Instead of eating lunch at your desk, go to the lunch room and chat with your coworkers. Being social is a great mood-booster and will help increase your productivity. Take time to meet with coworkers outside of work if circumstances permit. This with deepen your friendship and result in a move motivating work environment.

4. Practice healthy habits

The cold winter weather doesn’t have you in its best interests. Being sick is never fun, neither is it to share or catch other people’s germs. Take extra precautions during the winter months to eat right, take your vitamins, and wash your hands often, thus eliminating much chance of coming down with a cold or the flu.

5. Spruce up your work environment

Another often overlooked way to increase your productivity during the winter months is purchase new office furniture or decorative accessories. Simple changes can always bring about a boost in morale. Buying new furniture can be quite expensive, instead opt for used office furniture.
