Why are Ergonomics Important in the Office?

What is Ergonomics?

In case this is your first time hearing this word, let’s first look into what it means.

Ergonomics is the science of studying office comfort and safety. It determines how efficient and comfortable people are at their work station. It also includes working on ways to make them more productive throughout a routine workday.

An ergonomic study is carried out to check if the level of office comfort such as a chair, desk, mouse, computer screen size, for an employee adequate. This could ultimately affect their work, motivation and productivity.

Considering Ergonomics

In most offices, employees spend a large portion of their day sitting in front of a computer. Unfortunately, most workplaces pay little attention to ergonomics. As a result, poor office layout and design cause long-term illnesses and/or injuries to the staff. This can turn into healthcare costs and worker compensation.

Ensuring Safety

When you consider office safety and comfort a priority, there are a few simple, yet significant, factors to keep in mind. Little changes can go a long way.

The first place to start would be with your office chairs. Properly adjust the chair height so your feet can rest comfortably on the floor. This takes the pressure off your back and helps maintain good posture.

Secondly are your screens. Monitors should be placed roughly an arm’s length away from your eyes. The center of your screen should be at eye level. You can raise your screen by placing a sturdy, flat object underneath. It’s important to change your position frequently throughout the day to lessen fatigue.

The Benefits

Paying attention to ergonomics can do wonders for both employers and employees. Following are some of the proven benefits.

Improves Concentration

When employees are comfortable at their desk, it’s natural for them to perform better. Less fatigue and frustration mean better concentration and higher productivity. Over a period, this can result in greater revenues for the business.

Increases Office Safety

Making ergonomic changes in your office shows employees that you care about them. This proves your commitment to health and safety. Healthy employees are happy employees. When you create a positive work environment, even guests and visitors can see it. This means the overall image of your organization seems more positive.

Reduces Costs & Boosts Revenues

When ergonomic risk factors reduce, there are fewer injuries and more work being done. In the bigger picture, your organization would be paying less towards worker compensation and gaining more for the work being done. With a significant reduction in the direct and indirect costs, you end up saving more. With greater productivity amongst employees, the revenues also get boosted.
