If your career involves spending hours sitting in front of a computer, it might cause back and neck discomfort. Make sure your workspace is ergonomic by applying the following tips.
-
Sit properly
The correct seated posture can go a long way in keeping you comfortable at work. Sit with your feet on the floor and with a space of an inch or two between the back of your knees and the edge of your chair. These may seem like minor adjustments; however an inappropriate posture can be harmful to your health. If you’re too short for your feet to rest on the floor, you might try using a foot rest. Similarly, if you’re too tall for this position to work for you, a higher desk might be required. -
Position your screen
Your computer monitor should be a full arm’s length away from your head. Any father, and you’ll crane your neck; too close, and you’ll risk suffering from eye fatigue and headaches. Moreover, adjust the height of your monitor so that your eyes are in front of your browser's address bar.
-
Adjust your keyboard
You’ll sit most comfortably when your keyboard is an inch or two above your thighs and positioned so that your hands are centered between your shoulders as you use it. -
Get up and move!
Get up and walk around on a regular basis. At least once an hour, find a reason to move: pick up your mail, use the restroom, grab a cup of coffee or simply chat with a fellow employee. Regular movement will get your blood flowing, keep you more alert, and keep you comfortable throughout the day. -
Re-evaluate often
You may find that you need to make small tweaks every now and then to make sure you’re seated comfortably and not suffering from any discomfort.
